Persistent Prayer

feature photo

Why is it that many of our problems and troubles never seem to go away? I believe it is so we will stay on our knees in prayer seeking Jesus — the One who has overcome and conquered everything for us.

John 16:33 (AMP)

33I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

That being said, there is no substitute for being persistent when we pray. Jesus spoke clearly to us about persevering in prayer in the following passages.

Matthew 7:7-8 (AMP)

7Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you.
8For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened.

Luke 11:9-10 (AMP)

9So I say to you, Ask and keep on asking and it shall be given you; seek and keep on seeking and you shall find; knock and keep on knocking and the door shall be opened to you.
10For everyone who asks and keeps on asking receives; and he who seeks and keeps on seeking finds; and to him who knocks and keeps on knocking, the door shall be opened.

Moreover, the Apostle Paul, in his letter to the church of the Thessalonians, affirms what Jesus said about being persistent when we pray.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (AMP)

16Be happy [in your faith] and rejoice and be glad-hearted continually (always);
17Be unceasing in prayer [praying perseveringly];
18Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer and Mediator of that will].

In other words, we are being instructed not to quit or give up regardless of the circumstances. Sometimes asking is not enough. If not, seek. Sometimes seeking is not enough. If not, knock — and keep knocking until the door opens.

All-in-all, we cannot experience God’s best for us and our lives with faithless, halfhearted, thoughtless prayers. We know this based on the following scriptures.

James 1:6-8 (AMP)

6Only it must be in faith that he asks with no wavering (no hesitating, no doubting). For the one who wavers (hesitates, doubts) is like the billowing surge out at sea that is blown hither and thither and tossed by the wind.
7For truly, let not such a person imagine that he will receive anything [he asks for] from the Lord,
8[For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides].

James 5:16 (AMP)

16The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].

To summarize, if we will knock and learn to persevere in prayer (with faith) until the door opens, we can and will see God’s miracle working power come to pass in our lives.

God Bless!
