Under God Or Underdog?

feature photo

As he signed the law to include the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance on June 14, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “From this day forward, the millions of our schoolchildren will daily proclaim — the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty.”

Some time later, during his television program, Art Linkletter asked a little girl to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. She spoke out bravely, “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation underdog….”

“What?” Art stopped her. “Say that again!”

“One nation underdog,” the little girl repeated, “indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Of course, the audience laughed. The little girl had gotten the Pledge right, word for word, except for the two words under God. Those are key words because only as long as our nation is under God — will there be unity, liberty and justice for all.

2 Corinthians 3:17 (AMP)

17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, freedom).

That being said, what does under God mean? I believe “under God” means to be submissive to His authority, obedient to the laws He has written in our hearts and to recognize Him as our Source in all things.

When we place ourselves under God’s authority, we are not putting ourselves in the position of the underdog (one at a disadvantage and expected to lose). Instead, we are putting ourselves under the protection and care of almighty God.

Psalm 33:12 (AMP)

12Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the nation whose God is the Lord.

To summarize, if our nation is to remain standing and strong, we must unite and recognize God’s authority and place ourselves under the protection and care of His almighty power.

Matthew 12:25 (AMP)

25And knowing their thoughts, He (Jesus) said to them, Any kingdom that is divided against itself is being brought to desolation and laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will last or continue to stand.

God Bless!
