Don’t Blame God

feature photo

Why do bad things happen to good people? That is the age-old question.

What are some of the answers people give?

  • God is trying to teach us something.
  • God is getting back at us for something we did or did not do.
  • There is no God and things just happen.

The list goes on and on.

The truth is, many of those bad things did not have to happen. You are probably asking yourself, “If that is so, then who or what is the cause?” Let us start by clearing up one thing first. God is not to blame.

Now, we will examine a couple of scriptures for additional clarification and understanding.

Acts 10:38 (AMP) says, “God anointed and consecrated Jesus of Nazareth with the [Holy] Spirit and with strength and ability and power; and He went about doing good and, in particular, curing all who were harassed and oppressed by [the power of] the devil, for God was with Him.”

John 10:10 (AMP) Jesus states, “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).”

The two verses above tell us that there are two forces at work. God (Jesus) is the good one and the devil (satan) is the bad one. We need to remember that.

So, how do we get in on God’s blessings and avoid satan’s attacks?

The first thing we need to do is become a Christian. This does not mean just going to church and being a good person. That is not what makes us a Christian. We need to believe, accept by faith and confess Jesus as our personal Savior.

If you have reached the point in your life where you are ready to make a personal commitment to become a Christian and follow Jesus Christ, but do not understand or know where to begin, click on one of the following links (opens in new window) to learn more and get started on the road to living a better life.

Then, we need to read our Bibles to get as close to God as possible. We, as Christians, need to realize that God is not just a force out there. He is a spirit we can get close to and have a personal relationship with. He wants us to talk to Him, and He wants to talk with us. That is what prayer is.

Moreover, when we continually read the Bible, we will begin to increase our faith and learn God’s way of doing things. In turn, by faith and actually doing things God’s way, we will become blessed. The following verses of scripture will substantiate this.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” - Romans 10:17 (AMP)

Notice the previous verse says by hearing, not heard. Meaning, we cannot fight the spiritual battles we face everyday based on what we have heard. Instead, we must feed on the word of God daily in order to be triumphant against satan and the spiritual war he has waged against us.

“But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].” - Hebrews 11:6 (AMP)

“But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.” - Matthew 6:33 (AMP)

God does protect and reward people, but it does not come automatically. God will tell us things to do, places to go and what to say… and when we follow his directions, everything will work toward our benefit and safety. Some of God’s instructions can be found in the Old Testament under Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (AMP).

19I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live
20And may love the Lord your God, obey His voice, and cling to Him. For He is your life and the length of your days, that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Also, the entire 91st Psalm talks about the safety provided to those that abide in Him.

To sum everything up, God has given us everything we need to live safely and abundantly. We have no excuse because it is all in the Bible. Therefore, when something bad happens, we need to look inward at what we may need to change… but never blame God.

God Bless!
